The program includes two commonly taught fonts and supports many of the handwriting teaching strategies described in the National Literacy Strategy: Developing Early Writing guidance.

The CD-ROM has been designed to complement the BBC Words and Pictures television programme, for children from 5 to 8 years of age. Supportive narration, simple screen design and bright graphics ensure that all pupils can use the activities within the program independently.

Magic Pencil can be used successfully by an individual pupil, small groups or the whole class and is supported by the educational notes in the accompanying User Guide.
